OCEAN TIDES VOCATIONAL AND CAREER TRAINING PROGRAM 2010-11
Introduction
Commencing with the 2010-2011 academic year, students attending the Providence campus will be offered several elective courses in Vocational and Career Training. Specifically, interested students will be offered several classes in Building Construction and Maintenance and Culinary Arts. (See Course Description page).
The vocational training classes will be designed to prepare students for careers in the construction trades and food preparation industries. Further, these classes will serve to enrich their overall education experiences while attending Ocean Tides School. Those students who choose to participate in the program will:
• Be provided basic and comprehensive vocational instruction daily by well trained and qualified instructors,
• Be exposed to “real life” and “community-based” learning experiences, such as internships and job-shadowing experiences,
• Be assisted with transitioning to post-graduation vocational programs, community colleges, apprenticeship training programs and employment opportunities relative to their specific interests and goals,
• Be provided the full services of the Guidance department and the Director of Vocational Training, who will assist them with college applications, financial aid forms, employment applications, and vocational training programs,
• Be provided with Job Readiness Skills, such as completing job applications, preparing for interviews, writing resume and letters of interest, obtaining appropriate work attire.
In summation, providing the students of the Providence campus of Ocean Tides High School with an opportunity to explore their vocational aspirations, hone their skills and, thus helping them obtain meaningful employment, will be the overarching mission of the entire facility of the school as we begin this new school year.
As with the most viable and effective educational programs, the importance of achieving high academic standards are paramount. The Ocean Tides vocational training programs will strive to meet and exceed the following standards:
Culinary Arts Program
• The student acquires new vocabulary in each content area it correctly.
• The student participates in student-to-teacher, student to student and group interactions.
• The student will analyze career paths within the food and food industries.
• The student will demonstrate proper use, care and cleaning of commercial foodservice equipment and facilities.
• The student will demonstrate food safety and sanitation procedures.
• The student will demonstrate a variety of cooking methods including roasting baking, broiling, grilling, sautéing, frying, braising, stewing, poaching, steaming, convection, microwaving and other emerging technologies.
• The student will represent mathematics in multiple ways.
• The student will demonstrate commercial preparation for all menu categories to
