Academics

Instruction:

Curriculum development and implementation at Ocean Tides are grounded in the educational standards established by the Rhode Island Department of Education. This alignment allows for seamless transitions when a student returns to a traditional public school setting.

Instructional Strategies:

Faculty and staff’s approach to education recognizes that students learn at different paces and through various modalities, requiring flexible strategies that provide multiple pathways to understanding.

Special Education Services:

Ocean Tides provides tailored services and programs for students with disabilities, ensuring they receive appropriate education and support to reach their full potential.

Adhering to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Ocean Tides prioritizes educating students with disabilities in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE). This commitment translates into a flexible continuum of services tailored to each student’s needs. Students are placed in general education classrooms, where they benefit from supplementary aids and services. When a student’s needs cannot be adequately met within the general education setting, a specialized setting may be considered, ensuring access to more intensive interventions. To further enhance individualized attention and support, Ocean Tides maintains small class sizes, fostering a more personalized learning experience.

Multilingual Learners:

At Ocean Tides School, all MLL students are evaluated with the ACCESS for ELLs test during the RI state testing window in January. The MLL test has four domains: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Upon completion, test results are shared with the student’s home district. Ocean Tides School currently has one teacher who holds an MLL Endorsement Certificate and works with MLL students in an inclusive classroom setting. In addition, the MLL teacher provides resources and strategies to help our classroom teachers effectively engage and support their MLL students. Strategies for classroom incorporation include activating background knowledge, embracing student cultures, engaging and encouraging conversations in the classroom, checking for comprehension, building vocabulary, and using graphic organizers.

College and Career Services:

Ocean Tides School offers a school counseling program that addresses the needs and interests of all students, as it relates to their academic, social-emotional, and college/career development. Our School Counselor promotes a positive school climate that fosters acceptance of diversity, empathy for all, and perseverance through all life’s challenges. The School Counseling department advocates for equity and equal access to curriculum for all students so that they have the opportunity to acquire the skills needed in order to achieve success in an ever-changing world.

College and career guidance is curated from each individual’s intrinsic abilities brought forth by interest inventory assessments, individual learning plans, career workshops, and personal needs assessments. Each student’s fundamental pursuits are investigated on a 1:1 ratio with the school counselor, leading to furthering the student’s career and or collegiate aspirations while in the program.
